Ohio State vs Navy: A Buckeye blessing or problem!

The tone of the season for the Buckeyes will be set based on the USC vs OSU game.

If OSU looses in the shoe to USC, then then forget any chance of a national championship game.
If the Buckeyes beat the Trojans, then the door is open, despite the comments from those that : "love to hate Ohio State".

I don't know if this post will reach anyone, but we (OSU fans) need to be prepared for an important truth:
The Navy game is going to educate our players more than any game (played by OSU) in 2009.
    Why is this so?
    - Navy plays with more practiced skill than any team that OSU will face.
    - Navy hits HARDER than any team OSU will face (ask Notre Dame over the last 40 years!)

  2. I think Navy is the best possible opener for this Ohio State team. Navy is tremendously disciplined, which will force the Buckeyes into that mindset from the very first week. Also, they are a legitimate opponent that will excite Ohio State's players. Let;s be honest, Youngstown State does not excite anyone but YSU.

Personally, Navy’s option attack gives me nightmares. Ultimately, I think a little defensive discipline by the Buckeyes, plus their athletic superiority should be more than enough.

If Navy was the third game I would feel differently but they get all summer to practice for it.

I don't know. With all the new starters, I would have preferred some cupcake team. The Bucks will be looking forward to USC but Navy will be fired up. I figure our offense won't be humming on all cylinders yet and Navy should have a good defense (6 back from last year - Frazier is gone I think, which is a break for us). Not sure how much of a pass rush they have. The Navy offense will test our new linebackers. The QB, Dobbs, I think, can run a bit and throw, unusual for Navy. I don't think they will have much luck up the middle against our front four. I'm thinking a one td lead (OSU) going into half-time and then taking command in the 3rd or 4th as our big guys start pushing them around. If Navy get a lead and a couple of big stops OSU might falter. Plus I don't see the crowd playing a big role. It's a hard team to cheer against.

Overall, this year's Bucks worry me. With the (possible) exception of TP, maybe Boren, no-one is really proven. If they come together as a team and a couple of players step up, they could be good. If not, it could be ugly.

  4. @dtensor:

I tend to envision a similar scenario heading the locker room at the half but I think it is more due to missed opportunities and rusty execution by Ohio State. I can hear a lot of fans in the concourses saying, "Man, if Pryor throws that pass one second earlier that is a touchdown" or "If it was not for the [insert penalty here] they would have scored a touchdown."

I do not think Navy has the firepower to consistently move the ball. While they may get an early score due the unique nature of their offense, the overall athleticism of OSU's defense will rule the day. The defensive stats may not be stellar (sacks, TFL, INT) due to Navy's style but I think the performance will be impressive.

I hope TP comes out firing and shredding their secondary and Bauserman takes over in the third quarter with a 28 point lead and then the 3rd string qb (Siems? who is he? - what happened to Guiton or Oltornik?) goes 4 for 4 in the 4th.
But I have vague recollections of last year's offensive struggles.

And I have a feeling that for the first quarter we'll see our linebackers running at high speed in the wrong direction or overpursuing. Your point about discipline is a good one but we have some young guys out there (Heck, I'm an old guy and if I was out in front of 100,000 people I'd be running all over the place and getting juked out of my socks. Albeit pretty slowly).

I saw Navy play a couple years back in the Poinsettia bowl here and they were pretty good - of course that was a different coach.

Or maybe we'll shut them out like the last time they dared visit the shoe (not that I remember - I'm not that old).
